Christmas cactus - Schlumbergera truncata
Christmas cactus - Schlumbergera truncata are epiphytic plants that grow on trees and absorb moisture from the air. They are from Brazil and this makes them somewhat different from their dessert dwelling cousins. In their natural environment, they grow amongst the trees and other plant species where they live with part shade and part indirect sunlight. Direct sun will burn them. The other difference is their need for a constant moisture supply.
Their flowers are a real treat. I tend to think they look like flying swans. Which makes them a special gift for a special friend.
They make great indoor or patio plants, but can be grown in the ground, in indirect light. They also look great in a macrame hanger.
Needs
Composted and well draining soil is important. Don't over water. They rather need a constant, slightly moist, as opposed to deep wet watering situation.
Feed them with a little worm tea once a month, or every 2 - 3 months, but not when they are flowering.
How to make Christmas cactus - Schlumbergera truncata Flower
In their natural habitat, the longer nights and colder temperatures of autumn, trigger their flower production. For this, make sure they have about 12 hours of darkness and a drop in temperature to about 10 degrees Celsius.
