White King protea - Ayoba
An iconic member of the Protea family (Proteaceae) the White King protea - Ayoba, is part of the unique, indigenous fynbos group of South Africa.
Cynaroides means “like artichoke”, which speaks for itself. They are known for their spectacular, long lasting blooms which are grown and exported all over the globe as cut flowers. Blooms appear from the second year and the plants bloom annually thereafter.
Proteas are named after the Greek God Proteus, who could change his form at will, a clear indication of the extraordinary diversity and adaptability of this large group of plants.
Visually, it's an impressive garden plant, as a focal point or planted in groups.
Indoors they will inspire you with their long-stemmed, bold cut flowers.
They make beautiful gifts, when you don't know what to give, but want something really special. Then this unisex, eco loving plant in a special container is a great option. That's if you are able to part with this constant supply of gifts and or inspiration. They flower in late winter and spring, from June to October.
Consider all the benefits of this rewarding beauty of their flowers, in and out of the home and a low maintenance, hardy, waterwise indigenous shrub.
White King protea - Ayoba Conditions
Like all proteas, they are resilient and prefer to grow in acid, nutrient poor soils. They are sensitive to phosphorus fertiliser
They are adaptable to a wide variety of climates and can withstand harsh coastal conditions, strong winds, poor sandy soils, full sun, and are drought resistant once established. Add a thick layer of mulch with bark, straw, leaves, around the base to suppress weeds and maintain consistent root temperature. However, be cautious about excessive mulch in poorly draining soil, as it may lead to root rot.
The single most critical factor is to provide adequate water drainage. Plant them on slopes or on slightly elevated mounds if you don't have proper drainage. Generally they’re hardy and can tolerate frost around 25-30°F.
Mulching keeps the plants cool in summer, warm in winter, holds in moisture, and discourages weed growth. Mulch must be kept off the trunk of the plant so the crown of the plant is able to dry off. Take caution to mulch too heavily in poorly draining soil, as it may lead to root rot.
They will need a regular deep watering once a week until they have become sufficiently well established.
White King protea - Ayoba Pruning
Pruning the long flowering stems to use as cut flowers only benefits the plant by keeping the plant full, improving light penetration and increasing air circulation through the branches.
Only prune branches with flowers, as they carry flowers on 2 year old branches.
Pruning is best done during and after flowering. make cuts above at least four or five leaves. Never cut into bare stems (no leaves). Always remove old flower heads.
White King protea - Ayoba Landscaping
a dynamic shrub that grows to approximately 2.4 x 2.4 m in size. Plant them further back in garden beds to prevent overshadowing other plants. Bold and Beautiful, this protea species will create a textured contrast alongside reed-like restios and stately aloes. For a natural look plant them in a gravel bed or rock garden alongside smaller succulents for a low-maintenance and water-wise garden. They are ideal for screening or hedging or just singularly to enhance any composition in the garden.
